The chief executive of a Devon private client firm is bringing a leading Canadian lawyer referral service to the UK this spring. The UK version of LawyerLocate will operate on “exactly the same model” as the Canadian – which became Google’s first Canadian legal industry partner last year.

It is no great secret that the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) sees its role in enforcing the government’s ban on referral fees in personal injury as a hospital pass. It would much rather that paying or receiving a referral fee be made a criminal offence and taken out of its hands. After all, the SRA (in its previous guise as part of the Law Society) has been down this road before and it wasn’t a happy experience.

TV dramas have made many people think that the legal profession consists of heroes (or villains) in high-flying firms or public prosecution. In reality, nearly a quarter of solicitors work in-house.
Increasing demand for ‘hot’ areas of law inspires opportunist law firms to hire more specialists to add to their firepower – the right people at the right time. Yet this is a big ask.
Learning has come a long way since I qualified. There’s a lot more knowledge available about how students learn and how different students learn differently. It’s not one-size-fits-all anymore.
