There are widespread failures among law firms to comply with a host of key regulatory requirements, from their websites to the Bribery Act, new research seen exclusively by Legal Futures has shown. The figures indicate that there is simply too much for small firms to comply with, according to its author.

The Legal Services Consumer Panel is standing by its recommendation to retain referral fees, saying it has seen no new evidence of consumer detriment to back a ban. Meanwhile, the Bar Council says its legal advice shows referral fees fall foul of the Bribery Act.

There are “significant risks” for law firms offering gifts, entertainment and to pay for expenses as a result of the Bribery Act 2010, the Law Society has warned. While referral fees should not fall foul of the Act, solicitors need to be aware of whether their introducers are behaving in a way that might.
