Codified Strategy

About us

Codified Strategy [1] embeds qualified solicitors and barristers within law firms, chambers, and in-house legal teams as fractional technology advisers. We work on fixed monthly retainers, providing the strategic technology leadership that most SME practices and legal departments cannot justify hiring full-time.

Every consultant we deploy has practised law. They understand the regulatory environment, the workflow pressures, and the compliance obligations that shape how legal technology actually needs to work in practice. That background removes the most common failure point in technology advisory: the gap between what an adviser recommends and what a practice can realistically implement within its regulatory and operational constraints.

A managing partner or general counsel does not need to explain SRA expectations on cybersecurity, why client confidentiality constrains certain technology choices, or how fee structures affect a business case for automation. Our consultants come with that context already.

What we do

We deliver technology strategy, implementation support, fractional CTO oversight, and regulatory compliance advice on a single retainer at a significantly lower cost than a Big 4 consultant or other competitors.

Our work covers technology roadmapping, practice management system selection, AI policy and governance, SRA and AML compliance as it relates to technology, and cybersecurity posture. For barristers’ chambers, we also advise on clerking systems, fee management software, and the particular confidentiality obligations that arise in advisory practice. For in-house teams, we work across legal operations, technology procurement, and the governance frameworks that general counsel are increasingly expected to own.

We also run a Legal Technology Masterclass programme for solicitors, barristers, and in-house lawyers who want to build their own capability alongside — or instead of — retaining external support. We can also provide bespoke training programmes for firms that wish to create a group of subject matter experts.

Technology as a retention tool

The firms that attract and keep good lawyers are increasingly those that can demonstrate a serious technology offering. Fee earners, particularly those earlier in their careers, weigh up technology environment alongside salary and culture when choosing where to work. A practice running outdated systems, with no clear plan to modernise, is at a disadvantage in the market for talent before the interview has started.

The same applies to clients. Practices that run efficient, well-governed systems are better placed to win and retain work than those that cannot.

Getting the technology right also has a direct bearing on working life. The right systems reduce administrative burden, cut time spent on tasks that do not require legal judgement, and give fee earners more control over how they manage their caseload. That has real implications for workload, sustainability, and the kind of culture a firm is able to build and sustain.

Codified Strategy helps practices make the technology decisions that underpin all of this. Not as a one-off project, but as an ongoing strategic relationship with advisers who have worked in legal practice themselves and understand the realities from the inside.

Who we work with

Law firms, barristers’ chambers, and in-house legal teams making technology decisions without a qualified technology strategist involved. Practices that have deferred those decisions, or made them without the right expertise in the room, and want to get ahead of what is coming and abreast of what is already here.
