Rule of Law and Access to Justice

LexisNexisBy Legal Futures’ Associate LexisNexis [1]

Pro Bono Week 2020 runs from 2nd to 6th November.  LexisNexis have partnered with Pro Bono week to ask some of the country’s leading legal minds – where do we go from here?

Hear the debate and discussion with Baroness Hale, Baroness Kennedy QC, Simon Davis and Matthew Ryder QC on Friday 6th November.

Pro Bono week recognises the voluntary contribution made by lawyers across the UK in giving free legal help to those in need.  This year, more than any other, the need for voluntary legal aid has never been more important.  Access to justice is a vital element of the Rule of Law.

There can be few times in the modern history of the UK where the Rule of Law has been at the forefront of public attention and discussion – from the Internal Market Bill to the independent panel on Judicial Review, from the backlog in the court system to comments on the role lawyers play in the immigration and criminal justice system.  There is no lack of challenge to the Rule of Law.

It is easy to get agreement among lawyers that the Rule of Law is fundamental, but is that true outside of the profession?  If we are to protect the Rule of Law, the public at large need to feel the same way.  Join us for a panel discussion to discuss – where do we go from here?

The panel will review the health of the Rule of Law in the UK.  From there, it will consider what more can be done.  Does the law, the Rule of Law, and justice need rebranding?  How can we get the public to value the fundamental importance of the Rule of Law and the vital need for access to justice?
