Osprey Approach has released the latest episode of its Empowering Law Firm Leaders podcast, which features Matt Kelly, chief experience officer at DCM Insights. Now available to watch and listen to on YouTube, Spotify and Amazon Music, the episode explores why many law firms continue to struggle with business development despite investing in training, and the practical habits that can help leaders drive sustainable growth.
In episode 35, Amy Bruce, marketing director at Osprey Approach, speaks to Matt about what a year of embedding business development programmes inside law firms has revealed. Building on the research behind The Activator Advantage, first explored in episode 18 of the podcast series, the discussion moves beyond theory to examine why behaviour change is often the biggest challenge, and what separates firms making genuine progress from those reverting to business as usual.

This latest episode explores:
- What the past year has revealed about how law firms respond when they encounter this research
- Why behaviour change is harder than knowledge transfer – and what actually makes it stick
- How the most effective leaders close the gap between growth strategy and daily reality
- The BD Rhythm principle: why consistency outperforms episodic effort every time
- What separates firms making genuine progress from those that went back to business as usual
Reflecting on the changing legal market, Matt says: “The traditional, organic or acquired approaches to business development no longer guarantee success in a market experiencing significant change. What we find is that small, strategic, and intelligent changes in the approach to BD – changes that are responsive to what’s happening in today’s market – are most consistently equated with success.”
He explains that, while firms increasingly understand the importance of business development, lasting success depends on changing behaviours rather than simply sharing knowledge. “Business development in law is not a skills problem – it’s a behaviour change problem.”
The conversation explores why consistent, repeatable business development habits outperform one-off initiatives and how law firm leaders can create a culture that supports long-term growth. He also highlights the challenge firms face when business development becomes reactive rather than proactive: “When you’ve squeezed the pipeline dry and need to start over, it’s like restarting a cold engine. It’s much harder than keeping a refreshed pipeline of opportunities going.”
Future episodes of the Empowering Law Firm Leaders podcast series will feature other industry experts including Neil Heaney, founder of Judicare Law International, and Michelle Peters, a former Magic Circle solicitor turned business growth strategist, author, and founder of The Business Instructor.
