As millions of people continue working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic, the NCSC has launched a new tool to support individuals and businesses to comply with their data protection obligations.

Part of its Exercise in a Box toolkit, the new tool covers key aspects of working securely in a home environment, how to share and process data in compliance with GDPR, and how to respond to a cyber-attack remotely.

Christine Sabino, senior associate at data breach and cybercrime specialist Hayes Connor Solicitors, said: “Working from home poses a number of potential risks to the confidentiality of personal data. As many will continue working from home for an indefinite period, cybersecurity needs to be front of mind.

“These are challenging times with employees continuing to work in less than ideal circumstances while cybercriminals relentlessly seek opportunities to exploit this vulnerability.

The new tool from the NCSC covers how to safely access networks from home, the services to facilitate secure collaborative working, and the processes required to manage a cyber-attack remotely.

Richard Forrest, senior associate at data breach and cybercrime specialist Hayes Connor Solicitors, commented: “The pandemic has delivered an optimum environment for opportunistic cyber criminals. Individuals have been placed in extraordinary circumstances with many working in home environments that may not provide the same support as their office.

“Many will be juggling childcare simultaneously. A sense of fear amidst the continued uncertainty will not be helping the situation. It is vital for businesses to ensure that all employees are provided with additional support at this time to facilitate the secure storage, processing and sharing of personal information.”
