LexisNexis launches Protégé to deliver personalised AI support for UK lawyers

LexisNexisLexisNexis has launched its intelligent AI assistant, Protégé, into the UK market, bringing agentic capabilities and personalised support to legal. The rollout marks the next phase of the company’s AI-powered legal technology strategy, following launches in the USA and Australia, and shortly in Canada.

Designed to help lawyers draft, summarise and research faster and more accurately, Protégé acts as a smart assistant that can complete complex tasks, offer workflow suggestions and help users get more from their legal content and document management systems. The assistant has been developed in close collaboration with leading UK firms, including Eversheds Sutherland International and Irwin Mitchell.

Available in both the Lexis+ AI platform and Microsoft Word via Lexis Create+, Protégé is built with the highest levels of security, compliance and privacy. The system can perform a wide range of legal functions, including:

  • Drafting full, tailored transactional documents and reviewing its own work before passing to the human lawyer for refinement.
  • Suggesting legal workflow actions based on uploaded documents
  • Generating follow-up prompts tailored to individual workflows
  • Refining user queries to improve the quality of results
  • Storing tens of thousands of legal documents in a secure Vault for summarisation, drafting and research
  • Creating visual timelines from documents to track key events

The technology is underpinned by proprietary generative and agentic AI models, enabling it to deliver legal tasks while remaining grounded in both the user’s knowledge base and LexisNexis content.

Gerry Duffy, Managing Director of LexisNexis UK, said: “LexisNexis is focused on improving outcomes and unlocking new levels of efficiency and value in legal work to support our customers’ success. Our vision is for every legal professional to have a personalised AI assistant that makes their life better, and we’re delighted to deploy that to the UK through our world-class, fully integrated AI technology platform.”

Protégé is designed to integrate directly with leading Document Management Systems such as iManage and SharePoint. This allows legal teams to extract clauses, query firm-wide knowledge bases and generate content from their internal precedents, without leaving the tools they already use.

Irwin Mitchell is among the firms that contributed to Protégé’s development. Eleanor Windsor, Partner and Director of Knowledge at the firm, commented: “Working closely with LexisNexis during the development of Protégé has given us the opportunity to help shape a tool that genuinely addresses the practical demands of legal work. The technology will save our teams time and allow them to focus more on strategic client matters.”

Protégé is the latest evolution of the LexisNexis global AI platform, which now supports extractive AI (to retrieve key data), generative AI (to create content) and agentic AI (to carry out specific tasks on a user’s behalf). This unified platform ensures a consistent, secure and continually evolving user experience.
