Legal Research? Let me Google that for you.

JustisOneLogo200Big Data is everywhere. Allowing us to quickly collect and analyse huge amounts of information, offering us insights and helping make better decisions and solve problems.

However the legal research industry is languishing. JustisOne is embracing Big Data and using their 30 years in the trade to their advantage. “We’ve spent decades gathering legal materials – often from hard copy” says managing director, Masoud Gerami.

“We’ve been to courts, libraries and basements all over the world to get our hands on everything we can find.” The result is a dataset to mine that would take anyone else many years to accumulate.

There are tens of thousands of cases every year and the secondary data surrounding them is vast. JustisOne has developed algorithms that identify the most important passages in legal authorities, and built interactive visual tools that enable lawyers to navigate and explore entire families of related cases. “You can discover, in seconds what previously would have taken hours or even days to do.” says Robin Chesterman, VP of Product.

For the first time, content and data held on JustisOne is available via a Google search. Quick access to over one million cases and nearly half a million pieces of legislation. JustisOne assists users by interpreting and visualising this data – creating legal insights that can be used in a court of law.

This is a first in the UK and by releasing such a vast amount of content JustisOne will instantly disrupt the legal research market. Since being indexed on Google JustisOne has seen a 306% increase in organic site visits.

JustisOne has evolved from a publishing company to a technology company. Gerami continues “We realised that that we had to go beyond document delivery, and build tools on top of our content that allow lawyers to analyse, interpret and navigate the law.”

Intelligent, cloud-based machines working in tandem with human experts is the new model. “If you’re too automated, you may not be accurate, and if you’re too human, you’re probably not scalable,” says Chesterman.

“We think we’ve landed on the perfect mix, and the end result is a product that reduces the time spent doing legal research dramatically, but in a way that can be trusted.”
