New privacy and data protection regulations around the world seeking to enhance the safe keeping for individuals are causing a dramatic shift in operations across traditionally fragmented departments and teams. And there is no sign of this slowing down. There are now well over 700 data privacy and protection laws now in effect, worldwide.
What were previously well-defined practices – namely Data Privacy, E-Discovery and Cybersecurity – have now started to converge more than ever and these roles are changing. The same people, processes and technologies can now be used to solve wider challenges and objectives across these traditionally very siloed departments.
Although the catalyst was indeed the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe, other more recent factors have added to this convergence. The unprecedented COVID-19 situation is causing a generational shift in working practices, accelerating the need to drive organisational efficiencies and creating far-reaching implications for legal technology. Many say there will be no going back.
Organisations are now facing increasing liability risks associated with non-compliance to new and existing data privacy regulations, data breaches and cybersecurity attacks. Being responsible for demonstrating your governance and compliance efforts while also minimising legal risk, reducing costs, and improving productivity across your legal operations, has become the new normal. And a comprehensive approach to process orchestration is not only required, but is now more critical than ever. Fumbling together different technology solutions aimed at addressing single areas of this big picture, just simply won’t deliver the results you now need.
Exterro recently held an online webinar to discuss how organisations can take a holistic approach to managing their Legal GRC (Governance, Risk and Compliance) challenges , while exploring:
- The importance of an actionable data inventory
- Strategies to help mitigate data privacy and cybersecurity risks
- New technologies to help achieve your Legal GRC objectives
