Personal injury law firm Express Solicitors [1] has added to its achievements and purpose by evidencing the substantial effect it has on society as a whole as well as the injured people it represents.
A new report, compiled by Pragmatix Advisory, a leading independent research group, looked at the Manchester firm’s figures from 2024 and comprehensively assessed the impact on injured people, the wider UK economy, the public sector and the firm’s effect within its home region, the North West.
With these findings, Express Solicitors is the latest law firm to demonstrate its key social and economic impact, adding its voice to improve the image of the personal injury sector.
Express Solicitors CEO James Maxey said: “Sometimes the real positive impact of what we do in a personal injury law firm can be overlooked or diminished by claims of an increased compensation culture and a general negative rhetoric of us being ambulance chasers or vultures. We’re not dealing with clients who are scroungers, we’re helping people who have been injured through no fault of their own and they need the support to get back on their feet.
“So, this report backs up what we’ve always known at Express; that the work we do has a substantial benefit to wider society and injured people. We promote health and safety improvements across a wide range of areas and ensure people are safer at work. Even the smallest of our cases go towards helping to make things safer for the next person in that situation.”
The report estimates that the expected value of Express Solicitors’ impact on clients whose cases were signed in 2024 is about £192 million. This includes both direct compensation as well as costs secured to cover medical treatment, rehabilitation and any losses for clients.
And the impact on the public purse is substantial. Because of the medical treatment provided in private settings, it’s been calculated that Express has saved the NHS £16 million, that early return to work reduces benefit spending by £2 million and direct public expenditure recovered is £5 million.
With 85% of Express Solicitors’ clients being of working age, helping those injured get back to work is of paramount importance to Express. A fast recovery is critical so clients can get back into employment and reduce the risk of prolonged hardship. Most of the money won for the client goes towards rehab and support that they desperately need to be able to get back to a normal life.
The economic implications after an injury can be far reaching; a worker’s productivity can be impacted, or they may have to work reduced hours resulting in reduced tax revenues and higher public spending on benefits.
And of course, all these things have an impact on corporate profits and, in turn, corporate tax revenue. Tax lost, as the report says, can be around £1,900 per injured person.
Maxey added: “We’re a business focused on helping people. We’re known for fighting for the highest compensation for our clients and we go way beyond that in terms of helping with access to interim payments, treatment and rehabilitation as well as enabling a better quality of life after injury.
“All the value the report shows is complemented by the charitable work we do as well as our ‘Excellent’ Trustpilot score, which is one of the best in the sector.”
When it comes to its home region, the North West, the report demonstrates the significant economic contribution that Express Solicitors makes.
Express invests £25 million in employee salaries and £14 million with northern suppliers, strengthening both its workforce and regional supply networks.
This economic activity sustains around 938 jobs and generates £34 million in gross household income that circulates within the local economy.
