Cold sales calls to UK legal firms are on the rise, according to new figures from leading outsourced communications provider Moneypenny.

Over the last three months, cold calls to businesses including law firms have been up 23% on the same period last year.

Cold call volumes have been increasing steadily in the legal sector since 2020, although they’re not yet back to pre-Covid levels. Among Moneypenny’s clients, which include 75 of the top 300 legal firms, cold sales calls accounted for 67,000 of legal firms’ calls in 2020, 70,000 in 2021 and 72,500 in 2022 (to date) – compared with 82,000 in 2019.

Bernadette Bennett, head of the legal sector for Moneypenny said: “With cold calls on the increase it can be difficult for legal firms to resource call handling and filter out the noise so they can focus on the calls that really matter – namely those from clients and prospects.

“In the run up to Christmas and with economic uncertainty ahead, these calls are likely to increase further as businesses work harder to drum up new business and forge new connections.  Legal firms need to be ready and have measures in place so that even when phone lines are busy, customer care is not compromised.”

Moneypenny handles more than 2 million calls and chats each year for more than 1,000 law firms in the UK, including 75 of the Top 200, thanks to its dedicated team of legal receptionists.

Established in 2000, Moneypenny is the world’s market leader for Telephone Answering, Live Chat, Outsourced Switchboard, and customer contact solutions. More than 21,000 businesses globally benefit from Moneypenny’s mix of extraordinary people and ground-breaking technology.
