Actionstep establishes AI center of excellence

By Legal Futures Associate Actionstep [1]

Actionstep [2], a leading provider of cloud-based law firm management software supporting nearly 5,000 law firms globally, including approximately 2,000 in North America, has established a dedicated AI Center of Excellence, incorporating AI expertise, AI best practices for law firm management and a future-focused roadmap with AI functionality woven throughout. Driven by direct law firm feedback and insights from surveying the midsize market, [3] this roadmap addresses the challenge firms face in effectively adopting and leveraging AI to improve how they practice law, run their business, or better serve clients. Actionstep has been building out its’ AI expertise to also address law firm concerns about workflow interruptions, data security, and governance of the quality of work produced using disconnected AI and automation tools.

“Our product strategy aligns with what truly matters to our customers and how mid-market law is evolving, especially as it relates to artificial intelligence,” shared Triona Buckley, Chief Product Officer, Actionstep. “Law firms are still finding the ROI of AI hard to decipher and while the market is saturated with standalone GenAI tools focused on streamlining content production and review tasks, AI focused on supporting the management, operations and business of midsize law is only just now emerging. Our plans for incorporating AI functionality into our platform will help legal and management staff leverage AI securely and seamlessly to manage both the business and legal side of law firms.”

Actionstep has created an ambitious but pragmatic product roadmap with automation, Agentic AI, and GenAI woven into the functionality of almost every new feature, while continuing to provide a choice to use AI for specific tasks or not.

AI-driven product enhancements available or currently being developed as part of the AI Center of Excellence and global product roadmap include:

“As we talk with our clients about their AI journey, there’s a growing interest in intuitive automation and AI technology that really supports a law firm’s workflows and adapts to how certain roles work. AI should enhance human performance, not replace it. While Generative AI has its place, we are seeing a real desire to leverage task oriented, Agentic AI, combined with more intuitive automations, to better manage the day-to-day business and practice of law,” adds Buckley.

As part of the AI Center of Excellence, Actionstep has added senior AI product roles, invested in cutting edge AI technology infrastructure, and expanded platform engineering resources to support the development of AI-powered enabled features specific to the business of legal operations and law. Recently hired Franco Primavesi [5], Senior Director of AI Product Management, and experienced SaaS product manager, will lead the development and execution of Actionstep’s global AI product strategy, focused on delivering practical, high-impact solutions for law firm operations.
