First the Ashes, now the solicitors’ PII market – Aussie insurer grabs biggest share

Lloyd’s: syndicates boost QBE market share

QBE has taken over as the leading insurer of solicitors, figures released yesterday by the Solicitors Regulation Authority have revealed.

Between QBE Insurance (Europe) Ltd and two Lloyd’s syndicates, the Australian-based insurer secured 18.2% of the premiums paid for the primary layer of cover by firms last autumn, up from 12.9% in 2012/13.

Following its decision not to insure firms of up to and including three partners, XL Insurance – which had the biggest market share in the previous two years – saw its business melt away. From 16.5% in 2012/13, it received just 2.2% of premiums in 2013/14.

Travelers was one of the beneficiaries, with the joint share of Travelers Insurance Co and Travelers Syndicate Management reaching 14.7%, up from 11%.

Rounding out the top five were Zurich (up more than half a per cent to 9.4%), Allianz – falling marginally to 6.8% – and AmTrust Europe, the year’s biggest ‘mover’, from a token market share of 0.2% in 2012/13 to 6.7% for the current indemnity year.

The two main unrated insurers, Alpha and Elite, saw significant gains, to 6.5% and 4% respectively. According to the SRA, which will shortly consult on whether to require participating insurers to have at least a ‘B’ credit rating, both are expected to seek and obtain the required rating.

Other notable players in the market in 2013/14 are AIG (6.4%, down from 8.3%), Hannover (6.3%, down from 8.7%), Axis (4.6%, up from 2.5%) and Libra Barbican (4.5%, up from 4.1%).

The SRA previously compiled the market share list so as to allocate liability for the assigned risks pool, but has published it this year for information purposes.

Use the tools available to stop doing the work you shouldn’t be doing anyway

We are increasingly taken for granted in the world of Do It Yourself, in which we’re required to do some of the work we have ostensibly paid for, such as in banking, travel and technology

Quality indicators – peer recommendations over review websites

I often feel that I am banging the SRA’s drum for them when it comes to transparency but it’s because I genuinely believe in clarity when it comes to promoting quality professional services.

Embracing the future: Navigating AI in litigation

Whilst the UK courts have shown resistance to change over time, in the past decade they have embraced the use of some technologies that naturally improve efficiency. Now we’re in the age of AI.
