SOS200Long-established London law firm Payne Hicks Beach has signed up to SOS Connect from Solicitors Own Software (SOS) for document and matter management.

The firm, which has 140 people based at its Lincoln’s Inn offices, focuses primarily on private client, family and corporate work.

Virginia Farquharson, director of finance and administration, says it had previously used two separate software systems.

“We had decided to replace our document management system and then it became apparent that our accounting system was not being developed anymore, so we decided to look for a single replacement that could perform both functions,” she says.

“We did not require anything too complex and SOS Connect provided an all-in solution in a very straightforward way.”

Graham Colbourne, managing director of SOS, said: “Adopting SOS Connect will enhance and improve procedures and performance at Payne Hicks Beach. It is an extremely prestigious London law firm and we look forward to working with the team in the coming months and years.”

McKenzie Friends – a storm in a teapot

Legal Futures Conference 2011Photo by Jonathan Goldberg

If the recent furore about McKenzie Friend Marketplace shows anything, it is that the profession remains acutely sensitive to the apparent threat of competition by unregulated entrants into the legal landscape. But for an outside observer, the whole McKenzie Friend debate remains curiously overblown: if not a storm in a teacup, a storm at least in a teapot. For all the characteristic sturm und drang of the Law Society’s response to last year’s senior judiciary consultation, there was pretty widespread agreement among most respondents that McKenzie Friends are here to stay.
