Laird Expert improve productivity by reducing working day

Print [1]Following on from ITV’s programme ‘Workers or Shirkers’ [2],  and the dramatic increase in productivity seen by those firms implementing a 6 hour working day – Laird [3] decided to trial something similar within 2 departments at the beginning of February.

Productivity expert, Graham Allcott is the founder of Think Productive [4], and author of the best-selling book ‘How to be a Productivity Ninja’. He helped to devise the challenge that features in ITV’s Tonight programme Britain: Shirkers or Workers?

“The UK has one of the lowest productivity levels amongst advanced economies in the world – and yet everyone feels they’re busy and working hard!  Productivity is affected by many factors, but one solution could lie in lots of the smaller things that you, your team and your organisation can all do together.”

We don’t want our staff at Laird to be busy fools – we very much work on the ethos of work smarter not harder so implementing a 6 hour day trial seemed like the obvious thing to do – especially given the feedback from other companies who have implemented this before. We began the trial at the start of February across two teams and the results so far are outstanding.

The team have completed over 600 queries within the two week period increasing from the previously confirmed 247 per week an increase of around 21% (with a team member off all week).  They answered 89% of their calls which is up from the 83.5% in the two weeks leading up the trial.

More importantly, staff morale and motivation is up across both teams, with all staff saying they are enjoying their new working hours much more as it gives a better work life balance.

Our phone lines are still manned between our office hours of 9 – 5 so the service to our clients has not been disrupted whatsoever.  We will continue to monitor this with a view to rolling out across all departments.
