John Spencer appointed as member of Civil Justice Council

John Spencer

John Spencer [2], Director of Spencers Solicitors [3], has been appointed as the solicitor representative member of the Civil Justice Council (CJC). His appointment will commence on 1 October 2013 and last for three years.

Established in 1997 with responsibility for overseeing and co-ordinating the modernisation of the justice system, the advisory body includes members such as the Right Hon Lord Dyson and Robin Knowles CBE, QC.

John’s voluntary role will see him providing advice the Lord Chancellor, the Judiciary and Civil Procedure Rule Committee in his capacity as solicitor member. As part of this role John will serve on at least one working party.  These committees provide advice on the effectiveness of aspects of the civil justice system, and make recommendations to test, review or conduct research into specific areas. Recently the Contingency Fees and Predictable Damages working parties have both looked at implementation of the Jackson Report.

John comes to this new appointment with over 25 years of experience in the PI sector. He has been Vice-President of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) since April 2013 and was awarded the Outstanding Achievement award at the Eclipse Proclaim 2012 Personal Injury Awards. He is a past Chairman of MASS (the Motor Accident Solicitors Society), and was its representative director on the Portal Company Board until March 2013.

Commenting on his appointment, John said:  “It is a great honour to be appointed to the CJC to represent all solicitors in England and Wales. I am very much looking forward to working with the Council, and hope that I can bring a fresh perspective on the civil justice system in advising the Government.”
