Niche provider of equity release services, Equilaw has adopted DPS’s client portal solution to increase its staff productivity, enhance the level of service and connect all the parties involved in a transaction.

The law firm provides legal advice to home owners who are considering releasing equity from their homes. Equilaw is known and recommended by independent financial advisers across the country and works with virtually all of the major distributors in the sector. It is the sister company of Thomas Legal Group and together, the two entities count 78 staff.

mylegalspace, the case tracking solution from DPS, sends out automatic notifications every time a matter is updated, a milestone is reached or a stage is completed, informing all the parties concerned about the progress of a case. Being web-based, the portal is accessible 24/7, from anywhere in the world, from any Internet browser.

Equilaw, financial advisers and clients use mylegalspace to upload and sign documents, view the corresponding files and monitor their progress. The case tracking system also allows staff to manage user rights and thus allow or prevent certain persons from signing, editing, downloading or printing documents as and when needed.

Claire Barker, the managing partner of Equilaw commented on the newly adopted system: ‘’We adopt a fixed fee pricing model so we have to make every minute count. mylegalspace saves our staff a considerable amount of time as they no longer need to constantly call or email clients and financial advisers for simple updates to cases.

“The system does it for them automatically. This communication platform actually provides greater interaction as updates are easier to send and receive. As the amount of emails and phone calls are reduced, our staff productivity increases since they are able to focus on their legal work and provide an even more proactive approach to getting cases completed.’’

New clients are directed to a page on Equilaw’s website where they can request access to the portal so they can track their cases. mylegalspace complements the Conveyancing case management software from DPS that Equilaw have been using since the early the 2000s.  They also use DPS’s integrated legal accounting software.

Osman Ismail, the managing director of DPS Software added: ‘’Being a client of ours from the very beginning, we understand how Equilaw works and what its specific technology needs are. As the number of their clients is continually increasing, it only made sense to for us to recommend mylegalspace as a communication platform between solicitors-clients-advisers.

“We are pleased to see them using it to provide an outstanding service- the key element that helped them become a well-established law firm in the very competitive conveyancing market.’’

Rating lawyers by their wins and losses – a good idea?

Robert Ambrogi

Lawyers will give you any number of reasons why their win-loss rates in court are not accurate reflections of their legal skills. Yet a growing number of companies are evaluating lawyers by this standard – compiling and analysing lawyers’ litigation track records to help consumers and businesses make more-informed hiring decisions. The shortcomings of evaluating lawyers by win rates are many. Not least of them is that so few cases ever make it to a win or loss. Of equal concern is that, in the nuances of law practice, it is not always obvious what constitutes a win or a loss.
