Core Legal editor in chief encourages solicitors to bottle their knowledge and write a book

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see your name in print? Perhaps you’ve started a book, but haven’t got round to finishing it because life keeps getting in the way? Well, according to Core Legal member and serial-author Lisa Newton, it is possible to write a book quickly – and that business professionals who provide services can use their years of experience and ‘bottle this knowledge’ by writing a book about what they know to help others who want and need this information.

Lisa goes on to explain, “Solicitors are in a profession whereby they’re helping people with the same types of issues (more or less). Take a person who wants to get divorced, and is thinking about taking action. They’ll have similar types of questions running around their mind. How long will it take? What is the process? Will I get to keep my kids? How should I go about this the best way? Who keeps the house? And the best thing about when you’ve worked in an industry for a period of time … you have experience to share, lots of stories to tell and stories make great reading.”

A solicitor’s first thought may be on ‘client confidentiality’ but no names have to be mentioned. The idea behind these books are to give the reader an idea of what to expect, to answer the usual questions that they may have and ask in their ‘30 mins free consultation’ (thus freeing up the solicitors time), and then once they’re ready to actually take action, the first (likely) place of call will be to the law firm of the solicitor whose book they’ve just read.

For those people who are already running a business, they may well like the idea but won’t move it forward because there is that seed of doubt (I mean, how is one supposed to find the time!) but Lisa has a solution.  “With the proliferation of blog posts and website content, slides, presentations that business owners have been making over the years, if they looked at it carefully, they’d probably realise that they already have the makings of half a book there already! It just needs some organisation.”

The skills shortage in our businesses is the biggest threat to our industry when looking at cybercrime. Cybercriminals are not just after money but are looking for sensitive information too, so the legal services sector is an obvious target. In the last year we have had reports of around £7m of client money being lost to such crime. This is not an IT issue and it should not be left to the IT teams to sort out. It is a high-level responsibility and a board-level issue that must be taken seriously. We suspect that we will look back on 2016 and ask why we didn’t respond quicker.
